First-Time Setup Checklist Before Loading Demon on BO7

A six-step order of operations for setting up Cronus Zen before installing Demon on Black Ops 7, from firmware to a private-match test run.

Most support tickets I read trace back to one thing: someone skipped a step and installed the script before the hardware was actually ready.

I run this checklist myself before every fresh Demon install on my own bench Zen.

Below is the order I follow, why each step exists, and where things usually break.

The six steps, in order

Skipping ahead feels faster.

It usually costs more time than it saves.

Step 1: firmware check

Start with firmware, not the script.

Cronus Zen scripts assume the device is running current firmware, and Demon is no exception. The official Cronus Web Update Tool handles this: you enter bootloader mode, run the update, and return the device to normal mode. Skip this step and the installer can behave inconsistently, turning troubleshooting into a guessing game between firmware and script issues.

I always check firmware version before touching a new build.

Chasing a phantom bug for twenty minutes only to find it was a firmware mismatch wastes everyone's time.

Step 2: cable check

The cable is the least glamorous part of this whole process and the most common failure point.

If the browser doesn't detect your Zen, check the cable first, before ports, before browser settings, before bootloader mode. A worn or charge-only USB cable connects power but not data, so the Zen sits there looking plugged in while doing nothing. Try a second cable if the first one fails.

Port matters too. Plug into the port the Zen guides specify, not just any open USB slot on the PC.

Step 3: controller pairing

Demon's controller layout options only work if the selection matches what you're actually holding.

Default, Tactical, Bumper, Bumper Tactical, flipped triggers, Southpaw: Demon resolves all six through one consistent mapping layer, but that only helps once you tell it which layout you use. Get this wrong and the button mapping lands on the wrong physical buttons, which looks like a broken script when it's really a mismatched profile.

Confirm your BO7 in-game layout matches your Zen menu selection before moving on.

This single mismatch is behind a large share of "controls are wrong" tickets.

Step 4: browser install

This is the step everyone assumes is the whole process, when it's really step four of six.

Installing a Vera script from your browser follows one sequence: connect, pick a slot, flash, hand off to console. The current Demon build is V5.6, and the whole flash takes about 60 seconds with nothing downloaded to your PC. No third-party software, no leftover files.

Demon V5.6 shipped 2026-08-31 and fixed a staged control-timing issue under Auto ADS/Fire by sharing one firing-session timer between physical and synthesized fire. It also stopped the quick editor from opening during the menu chord, and made quick toggles save without re-running the full apply pass.

I checked the changelog before writing this.

The jump from V5.3 (2026-08-19) to V5.6 (2026-08-31) is only twelve days apart, which tells me the update cadence here runs closer to weekly than seasonal.

Step 5: slot selection

Pick an empty slot.

Cronus Zen holds multiple scripts across its slots, and installing into an occupied slot overwrites whatever was there. If you've never used the device before, this step is simple. If you're reusing a Zen that already has another game's script loaded, check first. The blue slot button does not do what a lot of people assume, so don't rely on muscle memory from another device.

Step 6: first test run

Never take a fresh install straight into ranked.

Run it in a private match first. Fire a weapon, check that the control behavior matches what the menu description says it should, and confirm the stick-guidance feature behaves as expected on your layout. Demon's core control modes run whenever fire is held, no game vibration or trigger effects required for Basic, Advanced, or Expert modes, though Automatic mode still needs Trigger Effects on for PS5 adaptive-trigger weapon detection.

Test both MP and Warzone banks separately if you play both, since Demon keeps five weapon-class profiles independent in each mode.

Why order matters more than speed

A rushed setup produces the same symptoms as a broken script: wrong behavior, wrong buttons, nothing detected.

The difference is that a rushed setup gets fixed in minutes once you go back through the order above, while a genuinely broken install can eat an entire evening of guesswork.

My take is that the six-step order matters more than any single tuning value, because a well-configured Demon profile on a mismatched controller layout will still feel wrong.

Following the order also makes troubleshooting faster if something does go wrong.

You'll know exactly which step to revisit instead of tearing apart the whole setup.

Quick reference for what to check at each stage

Here is a short version to keep next to your desk.

• Firmware: update through the official Cronus Web Update Tool before anything else.
• Cable: swap it if detection fails, before touching settings.
• Controller: match Default, Tactical, Bumper, Bumper Tactical, flipped triggers, or Southpaw to your real layout.
• Browser: install takes about 60 seconds and writes nothing to the PC.
• Slot: use an empty one, know what the blue button does first.
• Test: private match only, check both MP and Warzone if relevant.

None of these steps require special tools beyond a PC, a USB cable, and a browser.
